Hair Industry going green...slowly

Have you ever looked at the ingredients in your shampoo and wondered what the heck is that!? A jumble of words that you do not recognize yet alone know how to pronounce. Many of these ingredients are toxic and harmful to our bodies, yet many people are not informed.

Today with the big movement to go green and appreciate the world that we live in, people have become a lot more health conscious about how products are and can affect their well being.
The sad truth is that the hair and beauty industry are only now becoming concerned. Most of these words that you can not pronounce are chemicals such as parabens, dyes, and sulfates that can be deadly. They can affect our heart & central nervous system, as well as absorb into our blood stream causing long term damage. The saddest part of this all is that the FDA does NOT screen or require cosmetic products to meet a standard before reaching us the consumers. Therefore it is imperative that we become informed of these ingredients that are listed on the back of our products.

Websites such as cosmeticdatabase.com are popping up to inform consumers of the chemicals in many products available to us. It scores each product on a scale of 1-10 which determines how hazardous it is to our health. They also list the possible effects, such as cancers, that a product may cause. I would highly recommend checking out this site and researching the products you use on a regular basis.

I personally am taking a step back from synthetic products and have began using mostly natural and organic products.

Out of curiosity I wanted to see the possible concerns that were listed for relaxers.
Of all the relaxers researched, Motions Herbals Salon Natural had the lowest score of a 2. However, consumers were still at risk for cancer, developmental/reproductive/organ system toxicity, and enhanced skin absorption to name a few. On the other hand, Africa's Best Kid's Organics no lye was among one of the highest with a whooping score of a 10! Just wow, this is a product that many people are putting on the head of their young children. Such ridiculousness that a product such as this is even available to the mass market. This is just one more reason I will NEVER put a relaxer on my head or that of my future children.
